You might be confusing not guilty by reason of insaniity with competency to stand trial. He would not have been put in a psychiatric hospital for two years because of a not guilty by insanity plea before a trial, only if the judge thought he was so mentally ill that he was not capable of participating in his legal defense. He would only be tried (or allowed to plead) once he was restored to competency. That's when he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to thirty years.
