This is literally the first time I've heard of someone abruptly and voluntarily disappearing and leaving young children behind. I so often hear investigators insist that's what happened and - in my world (true crime and forensic psychology) - this is never the case. I imagine that, for the children, this must have been worse in some ways than learning your mother was murdered.
