My heart hurt reading this story. It reminded me of when I was a young psychologist and a father brought his daughter in to be "tested" because she wasn't doing well in school and he thought she was lazy. Turns out she had some significant intellectual deficits. It also turned out that he had taken her to be evaluated several times and refused to believe what was right there in front of him. We (our team of psychologists) spent hours trying to figure out how to communicate the truth compassionately and clearly. He didn't believe us either.
